Helpful Tips - Santiago Gaudio
Ricardo Druck   Santiago Gaudio

If you plan to visit during the high tourist season (January-February in summer, July-August in winter), book lodging in advance or try to get to town early enough in the day to look for accommodation.

There are several ATMs in town. But keep in mind that in many areas of the National Park, there is no cell phone coverage, internet access or ATMs.

Always take a rainproof jacket with you.

Don’t forget your personal id and the vehicle documentation as well as basic tools such as, a jack, flashlight and an extra set of car keys.

Take a map of the area including tourist circuits.

Respect traffic regulations and be environmentally friendly. Help us preserve San Martín de los Andes and Lanín National Park for future generations.

Hire licensed services and let Park Rangers know if you are going on a hiking trail.

Have your vehicle checked before setting out. Take into consideration distances, and places where you can get fuel, food and drinks.

Summer Clothing

Summer Clothing

Take into account that, in summer, even if temperatures can reach 30ºC (86ºF) during the day, weather can change abruptly. It is usually cool at night, and you cannot rule out a few days of rain. This is why we suggest you include warm rainproof clothes in your luggage. The best thing to do is to dress in layers, since you can add or drop clothes according to weather changes. Must haves are T-shirts, a light fleece or sweatshirt, and a windbreaker. It is also necessary to bring an extra pair of shoes, preferably hiking boots, and several pairs of socks. A cap or hat, sun block, bug spray, lip balm, sunglasses, cotton T-shirts, swimming suit and hiking pants will come in handy when visiting the tourist circuits in the area. Prolonged sun exposure without sun block protection is not recommended, especially up in the mountains where the consequences of the Ozone layer weakening are combined with strong winds.

Winter Clothing

Winter Clothing

It is a good idea to dress in layers, and in winter we recommend a warm waterproof ski jacket or anorak (down or synthetic). Shoes should also be waterproof, warm and with thick soles. Snow doesn’t usually pile up in the city but it does accumulate in the tourist circuits and especially in Chapelco Ski Resort. You may also find icy pavements and sidewalks in the morning, so we suggest you use caution. Sunglasses, sun block, lip balm and a warm hat covering your ears are recommended. Finally don't forget to include warm socks, a scarf and gloves in your luggage.
