Immigration Requirements

Personal Documents

  • Argentines and naturalized Argentine citizens: National Identity Document (DNI)
  • Other nationalities: passport, visa where applicable.
  • Children under age should travel with their parents. Parents should present marriage license or certified copy of birth certificate. In case of traveling with only one parent, a notarized authorization of the other should be presented. When a minor is traveling alone, a notarized authorization signed by both parents will be required.

Vehicle Documents

  • Tarjeta verde (official vehicle ownership card).
  • If you are not the owner of the vehicle, a notarized authorization to cross the border will be requested.
  • Argentine vehicles need to have the license plate number engraved in the windows.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Insurance coverage against third parties will be required to drive within the Argentine Republic. This should cover the owner of the vehicle or the driver and include a specific authorization to travel abroad if the vehicle is not registered in the Argentine country. It applies both for private and rented vehicles.
  • In the Chilean territory you can hire the following insurance to cover third party damage abroad: de Responsabilidad Civil Internacional de Vehículos Livianos (International Light Vehicle Insurance). This obligatory insurance will be required at Customs when crossing the border into Argentina.

Regular insurance motorvehicle policies can be extended paying an additional amount to cover vehicle damages abroad.

Customs Control

When coming into Argentina it is forbidden to bring

  • Any products with a commercial or industrial purpose.
  • Firearms, unless bearing specific RENAR authorization (National Firearm Registry).
  • Explosives, flammable materials or drugs.
  • Products that have been forbidden due to health or safety reasons such as seeds, meat, dairy, fruit and vegetables.

Duty Exemptions and Luggage

When coming into Argentina remember you can bring the following items without paying any duty:

  • Clothes and objects for personal use.
  • Books, brochures and newspapers.
  • Other articles with no commercial purpose, of any origin, up to US$ 150 per passenger (US$ 75 for children under 16). This duty exemption can only be used once a month.
  • Products bought at the duty free shop, with an additional duty exemption of US$300 per passenger.
  • In case of exceeding these duty exemption limits, a fee equal to 50% of the exceeding amount will be charged. There are no exemptions for bags sent through courier service.

Traveling with monetary instruments, currency, checks...

If you are coming into the Argentine territory with more than US$10,000 (ten thousand US dollars) or its equivalent in any other currency, whether in cash or any other monetary instruments (checks, traveler’s checks, etc) you are required to report it in the Formulario Declaración de Aduanas - Ingreso de Valores (Customs report for international transportation of currency or monetary instruments).

It is forbidden to export foreign bills and coins, and precious metal coins over US$10.000 (ten thousand US dollars) or its equivalent in other currencies, unless registered under financial agencies or exchange bureaus bearing the corresponding authorization.
